Tesla hikes Cyberbeast price by $15k as EV truck sales lag

Tesla has raised the price of its top-end Cybertruck, the Cyberbeast, by US$15,000 in the US, bringing the cost to US$114,990.

The price hike includes a new “Luxe Package” with Supervised Full Self-Driving and free Supercharger access, while prices for other Cybertruck variants remain unchanged.

Tesla launched the Cybertruck in late 2023 with a base price of US$60,990, over 50% higher than CEO Elon Musk’s original US$40,000 target in 2019.

Competing models like Ford’s F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet’s Silverado EV offer lower entry prices on some trims.

Tesla has recently offered discounts of about US$10,000 on selected Cybertruck inventory.

Cybertruck sales have lagged behind initial expectations, accounting for a small portion of Tesla’s total deliveries.

A recall in March covered around 46,000 Cybertrucks produced since November 2023, indicating total sales are far below the company’s stated annual capacity.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Massive reservation numbers rarely translate to actual sales in automotive

Tesla’s Cybertruck demonstrates how early consumer interest can dramatically differ from purchasing behavior, with approximately 1 million reservations converting to only around 50,000 actual sales—a conversion rate of just 5% 2.

This pattern reveals the significant gap between generating buzz through low-commitment reservations and converting that interest into completed transactions.

The disconnect becomes more apparent when considering Tesla collected roughly $1.5 billion from these $99 reservations by 2022 3, creating substantial early revenue despite the eventual low conversion rate.

Tesla’s experience reflects broader automotive industry challenges where reservation systems, while effective for generating early interest and capital, often overestimate actual market demand.

2️⃣ Price increases during weak demand signal production cost challenges

Tesla raised the Cyberbeast variant price by $15,000 to $114,990 1 while simultaneously offering $10,000 discounts on existing inventory 1, revealing conflicting pricing pressures.
