Tesla faces 30-day license suspension over autopilot claims
A California administrative law judge has ruled that Tesla used deceptive marketing for its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems, and recommended suspending the company’s licenses to sell and manufacture cars in the state for 30 days.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) said Tesla implied its cars could operate autonomously, despite requiring a driver to remain attentive and ready to intervene.
The DMV will delay suspending Tesla’s manufacturing license, allowing factory operations to continue.
The company has 90 days to address or remove misleading language about Autopilot and FSD before any sales license suspension takes effect.
Tesla renamed its premium driver assistance feature to Full Self-Driving (Supervised) after the initial accusations in 2022.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Tesla faces possible California sales pause amid a shrinking market
- Tesla vehicle registrations in California fell 11.6% in 2024 1.
- A 30-day sales license suspension after the DMV’s 90-day remediation window would likely have a modest effect on a global business, while still mattering in Tesla’s biggest U.S. market.
- A bigger risk comes from a 90-day order to remove or change Autopilot and FSD marketing. That shift could weaken a product edge Tesla uses to support higher prices across all markets.
Compliance tech can help align Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) naming and lower regulatory risk
- California regulators are scrutinizing ADAS marketing. Their move lines up with industry efforts that push plain naming, like the “Clearing the Confusion” common naming initiative run by the American Automobile Association (AAA) and partners 2. That program sets consumer-friendly names for driver-assist features.
- Automotive suppliers building ADAS now face pressure to match product names to industry guidance. This shift opens demand for compliance tools that check marketing claims against technical limits, similar to how the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) boosted privacy-tech vendors 2.
- Tech firms with brand monitoring and content governance products can help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) scan marketing materials, press releases, and dealer communications for language that overstates automation.
