Tesla extends lead in S Korea’s imported car market
Tesla sold 10,866 vehicles in South Korea’s imported car market in May 2026, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association.
The company led the rankings for a third straight month and again sold more than 10,000 units.
That gave Tesla a 36.4% share of imported car sales in May, ahead of BMW at 6,555 units and Mercedes-Benz at 3,553 units.
From January to May, Tesla sold 45,020 vehicles in South Korea. That was up 250.8% from a year earlier and equal to 30.8% of imported car sales.
The streak follows Tesla taking the overall imported car lead for the first time in the first quarter of 2026, ahead of the market’s long-time leaders.
The surge was driven largely by Model Y demand, while electric vehicle subsidies, confirmed early in January instead of March, helped pull purchases forward.
Imported electric vehicle sales reached 14,520 in May, or 48.6% of the market.
