Tesla expands in India with Mumbai experience center launch

Tesla will open its first experience center in India on July 15, 2025 at Jio World Drive in Mumbai.

The 4,000 square foot retail space was leased in March and is situated near Apple’s flagship store in the city.

This move is part of Tesla’s ongoing expansion in India.

Tesla now operates four commercial properties in India, including an engineering hub in Pune, a registered office in Bengaluru, and a temporary office near Bandra Kurla Complex.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ India’s evolving EV landscape presents unique market entry challenges

Tesla enters India as the local EV market is undergoing significant transformation, with domestic players fighting for dominance.

India’s EV market is projected to grow from $8 billion in 2023 to over $117 billion by 2032, representing enormous potential despite current low adoption rates of just 4% of total vehicle sales1.

The competitive landscape has shifted dramatically, with market leader Tata Motors seeing its dominant position erode from 70% to 53% market share, while JSW MG Motor has surged to 28% with innovative offerings like battery-as-a-service models1.

Tesla’s experience center strategy mirrors its historical approach of establishing retail presence before manufacturing operations, but faces an increasingly sophisticated local competitive environment where consumers are becoming more value-conscious.

The Indian market’s price sensitivity presents a particular challenge for Tesla’s premium positioning, as domestic manufacturers increasingly offer more affordable EV options targeted at mass-market adoption.

2️⃣ Leadership instability complicates Tesla’s global expansion efforts

Tesla’s India entry comes amid significant leadership turbulence that extends beyond just the departure of its India head, Prashanth Menon.

The company is experiencing a broader leadership exodus globally, with key executives like Omead Afshar (Director of Operations for North America and Europe) and other senior personnel departing in recent months2.

This leadership instability coincides with challenging market conditions, as Tesla has seen its European sales drop by 27.9% while the overall EV market grew by 27.2% in the same period2.
