Tesla dominates Korea EV market on aggressive pricing

Tesla Korea reported a significant rise in EV sales last year, with 59,949 units sold, marking a 101.5% increase from 2024, according to market tracker CarIsYou.

The Model Y SUV was the top-selling imported vehicle in Korea, with 50,405 units sold, a 169.3% increase year-on-year, surpassing long-dominant models like Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class.

Tesla has recently lowered prices on its Model 3 to below 40 million won (US$27,100) after subsidies and also implemented discounts on its Model Y.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Tesla’s price advantage depends on EV subsidies that can change

  • Tesla’s Model 3 price being kept under 40 million won is tied to government EV purchase subsidies, which can be revised.
  • In 2026, the maximum national subsidy gap between Tesla and Hyundai was narrowed to 1.5 million won, down from 3.7 million won a year earlier 1.
  • To judge whether Tesla Korea’s pricing holds up, post-2026 national and local EV subsidy rules must be reviewed, including price-cap thresholds that set buyer support levels.
  • For 2025, the Ministry of Environment set a tighter full-subsidy vehicle price limit at KRW 53 million, down from KRW 55 million; for 2027, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment set the full-subsidy standard at under KRW 50 million, down from under KRW 53 million 23.

Surging Tesla sales create a bottleneck and opportunity in residential charging

  • Rising Tesla Korea sales, especially among buyers in their 30s and 40s, can strain residential charging and create room for new services.
  • Many in this group live in apartments, where shared parking and building-management rules can slow charger installation in multi-unit housing.
  • The government budgeted KRW 618.7 billion in 2025 for charging installations, with priority funding for fast chargers in dense cities such as older multi-family housing 4.
  • Rules also require new apartment complexes to install EV chargers in 5% of parking spaces 5.
