Tesla China-made EV sales rise 39.4% in May

Tesla’s China-made electric vehicle sales rose 39.4% year on year in May to 85,982 units, including exports from its Shanghai plant, the China Passenger Car Association said.

The total was up 8.2% from April and marked Tesla’s seventh straight month of growth.

Tesla registrations also rebounded in several European markets after earlier weakness.

The May figure is a wholesale number that combines domestic sales and exports.

In January 2026, Shanghai sold 18,485 and 50,644 vehicles in China and overseas, respectively, showing how that mix can shift even when total shipments remain relatively strong.

BYD, a Shenzhen-based Chinese electric vehicle maker and Tesla’s biggest Chinese competitor, maintained strong shipments to Europe and other markets.

Tesla is also still waiting for regulatory approval in China to roll out its most advanced driver-assistance features.
