Tesla China sales rise in early 2026 as BYD falls
Tesla’s China-made EV sales rose more than 35% in Jan–Feb 2026 to 127,728 after adjustment for the two-week Spring Festival slowdown, the China Passenger Car Association said.
BYD, the Shenzhen-based automaker, reported a 36% drop in deliveries year-on-year in the same period.
Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory produces the Model 3 and Model Y for domestic and export markets, and the combined Jan–Feb sales volume from the Shanghai Gigafactory was second only to BYD.
BYD unseated Tesla as the world’s largest EV seller on a calendar-year basis in 2025, and the article said the company’s exports exceeded its domestic sales in February for the first time.
Other Chinese automakers have grown more competitive by offering a wider spread of features at cheaper prices, chipping away at sales from both BYD and Tesla.
🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
BYD’s China sales slump is a story of surging rivals and a calculated overseas pivot
- BYD’s deliveries fell year on year in Jan to Feb 2026, while several local rivals grew in the same window. Nio rose 77% and Geely’s Zeekr brand climbed about 84% 1.
- Rivalry has turned into “involution,” a cycle where automakers stack on features and perceived value while keeping prices low. Xiaomi’s new YU7 SUV even outsold Tesla’s Model Y in January 1.
- BYD is leaning harder on overseas demand. Exports beat domestic sales for the first time in February and made up 53% of total volume 2.
- Part of the slowdown may tie to a “demand vacuum” after China brought back a 5% purchase tax on new energy vehicles (a Chinese policy category that includes battery-electric cars and many plug-in hybrids) at the end of 2025, which likely pulled purchases into late 2025 1.
BYD is responding to its sales slump by pushing charging times closer to refueling
- BYD is trying to move the fight off price and onto tech with its Blade Battery 2.0 3, 4.
- The battery charges from 10% to 97% in about nine minutes. The target is “charging anxiety,” drivers’ concern that charging takes too long or that chargers are unavailable when needed 5, 6.
- BYD plans 20,000 dedicated 1,500-kilowatt (kW) charging stations across China by the end of the year 7.
- Pairing its battery system with a dedicated network could speed the shift away from internal combustion engines by making EV charging closer to the ease of refueling with gas 7.
