Tesla is planning to set up an electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Satara, Maharashtra, operating as a completely knocked down (CKD) unit to benefit from lower import duties.

CKD assembly allows Tesla to import parts and assemble EVs locally, aligning with India’s policies that support domestic EV manufacturing.

The company previously explored sites in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat and considered a joint venture with Megha Engineering, but Satara has now emerged as the likely location.

Tesla has leased office space in Mumbai and secured showroom locations in Delhi and Mumbai, while hiring over 30 roles in India to support operations.
