Tesla to bring more AI products to China
Tesla said it plans to bring more AI and other intelligent products to China.
Tesla China Vice President, Grace Tao highlighted the country’s role in the EV maker’s supply chain and sales network.
Tao said Tesla works with more than 400 Chinese suppliers, with over 60 supplying its global network, and that parts localization at its Shanghai Gigafactory was above 95%.
As of March 2026, Tesla had 588 directly operated stores in 119 mainland Chinese cities, along with more than 2,500 supercharger stations and over 12,000 connectors.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Tesla’s China strategy is shaped by intense competition and regulatory hurdles
- Tesla still needs regulatory approval in China for Full Self-Driving (FSD), an advanced driver-assistance system, even as it plans to bring more AI products to the market, said Grace Tao 1.
- The company now expects full approval for FSD in China by the third quarter after earlier aiming for the first quarter 1.
- Lower-priced Chinese electric vehicle rivals are adding pressure, which could slow Tesla’s recovery as it tries to stand out 1.
- Its 95% parts localization also fits with earlier Chinese industrial policies that linked subsidies to local assembly and approved domestic battery suppliers 2.
Tesla’s deep China integration complicates decoupling narratives
- More than 400 Chinese suppliers sit at the center of Tesla’s global manufacturing footprint [summary].
- Markets have shifted from near-term vehicle sales to Tesla’s AI plans and future tech growth 1.
- Progress with AI products in China may serve as a marker in the broader U.S.-China tech race. Beijing, the Chinese government, has made humanoid robots a strategic priority, and Chinese companies may scale production before Tesla 3.
