Tesla bets on luxury buyers in long-awaited India debut
Tesla Inc. has opened its first showroom in India, marking its entry into the country’s automobile market.
The showroom, spanning 4,000 square feet, is located in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex and features Model Y crossovers imported from China, priced at over US$56,000 before taxes and insurance.
A second showroom in New Delhi is expected by the end of July 2025 as the company ramps up hiring and warehousing but has not committed to local manufacturing.
India’s EV market remains underdeveloped, with luxury vehicles accounting for only 1% of car sales, placing Tesla in direct competition with German brands.
The expansion comes amid slowing sales in China and the US, making India an appealing yet challenging market due to high import tariffs.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has hinted at a potential manufacturing base in India, and future trade talks with the US may shape Tesla’s long-term strategy in the region.
