Tesla battery deployments fall 15% in Q1 2026
Tesla’s energy storage business, which has helped offset weaker EV sales, is facing new scrutiny after first-quarter 2026 battery deployments fell 15% from a year earlier.
Tesla reports batteries and solar business together, with revenue rising from US$2.8 billion in 2021 to US$12.8 billion in 2025.
Annual energy storage deployments reached 46.7 gigawatt-hours last year and auto revenue fell from a US$82.4 billion peak in 2023 to US$69.5 billion in 2025.
Weaker US solar and wind development could weigh on battery demand even as data centers become a larger market for storage systems.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Energy profits matter, though this business was expected to swing
- Tesla’s energy unit brings in about twice the profit margin of its vehicle operation, even as battery deployments slowed 1.
- That business helps offset thinner car margins and a drop in high-margin regulatory credits 1.
- The fall in deployments does not necessarily signal a lasting shift. Analysts have long described the energy unit as “lumpy,” with results moving around based on project timing 1.
A weaker energy business could tighten funding for robotics and AI plans
- Profit from energy also helps cover Elon Musk’s planned surge in capital spending 1.
- Those efforts, including higher output of humanoid robots, are expected to top US$20 billion in 2026 alone, which adds strain to Tesla’s cash flow 2.
- If the weakness lasts, the effects could reach beyond Tesla. Enterprise data centers now make up a bigger market for Megapack, Tesla’s utility-scale battery storage product, which supports AI workloads and cloud infrastructure 2.
