Tesla applies for license to supply electricity in UK

Tesla has applied for a license to supply electricity to homes and businesses in England, Scotland, and Wales, according to a filing with UK energy regulator Ofgem.

Tesla, known for its electric vehicles, also operates a solar energy and battery storage business.

If approved, Tesla could begin supplying power as early as next year, entering a market currently dominated by established energy firms.

Tesla Electric, the company’s energy unit, already operates a similar service in Texas, allowing EV owners to charge at lower rates and sell surplus electricity back to the grid.

The UK application was submitted by Andrew Payne, who leads Tesla’s European energy operations.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tesla’s energy pivot comes amid sharp European EV sales decline

Tesla’s application for a UK electricity supply license arrives as the company faces significant challenges in its core European automotive business.

The company’s EV registrations dropped 60% in the UK and 55% in Germany in July, contributing to a 33% sales decline across Europe in the first half of 2025 1.

Tesla has lost its position as Europe’s top-selling EV maker to Volkswagen, which saw a 78% year-over-year increase in sales during the same period 1.

This timing suggests Tesla may be accelerating its diversification into energy services as a strategic response to intensifying automotive competition from both traditional manufacturers and new entrants, particularly Chinese companies like BYD.

The company’s existing experience operating Tesla Electric in Texas, where it already allows EV owners to charge cheaply and earn money by selling surplus electricity back to the grid, provides a proven business model that could be replicated in the UK market.

2️⃣ UK energy market presents substantial opportunity despite industry consolidation

The UK electricity supply market represents a significant revenue opportunity, projected to reach £52.1 billion by 2025, with the broader renewable energy market valued at $23.86 billion in 2024 and growing at a 20.6% annual rate 23.

However, Tesla would be entering a highly consolidated industry with only 35 companies currently operating, down significantly since market liberalization in 1999 3.
