TenPay Global, Tencent’s cross-border payments platform, and ShopeePay, Sea’s digital payments and financial services arm in Southeast Asia and Brazil, launched a cross-border quick response (QR) payment service in China on August 20.

The service lets ShopeePay users pay Weixin Pay QR code merchants through the ShopeePay and Shopee apps.

The rollout will start with users in Singapore and Thailand before expanding to Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

It uses TenPay Global’s cross-border payment infrastructure and Weixin Pay’s merchant network.

Tencent said TenPay Global has partnered with nearly 50 international digital wallets across 13 countries and regions.

These include PayPal in the US, South Korea’s Hana Pay and Travel Wallet, Laos’ BCEL, and Mongolia’s HiPay.

The launch comes as China has issued a guide for overseas visitors on using payment services in the country, including mobile payments.
