Tencent-backed AI chipmaker Axera plans $379m Hong Kong IPO

Chinese AI chipmaker Axera Semiconductor plans to raise HK$3 billion (US$379 million) through a Hong Kong IPO, according to a regulatory filing.

The funds will be used for technology upgrades, product development, sales growth, potential acquisitions, and working capital.

Axera, formerly Shanghai Zhiaixin Semiconductor, is backed by investors including Tencent and Qiming Venture Partners.

The company is offering 104.9 million shares at HK$28.20 (US$3.6) each, with cornerstone investors such as OmniVision and WILL Semiconductor participating.

Founded in 2019, Axera designs AI inference chips for on-device computing, edge inference, and smart vehicles, with its processors enabling real-time visual data processing.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Crucial valuation metrics require further clarification

  • The IPO offer price of HK$28.20 and 104.9 million shares offered are given, but the implied post-IPO market capitalization is still unclear because it is based on total shares outstanding.
  • A price-to-sales multiple cannot be worked out without the market cap number, so the valuation cannot be compared against other chipmakers selling AI inference chips for on-device computing and edge inference.
  • Revenue was reported as up 5.8% to 269.0 million yuan in the first nine months of 2025, while the net loss was reported as widening to 855.7 million yuan. The expense drivers behind that loss should be reviewed to judge the path to profitability.

Axera’s IPO highlights opportunities for software and integration partners

  • Software vendors and system integrators can use Axera’s planned sales expansion to deliver AI apps for smart cameras, factory gear, and vehicles.
  • Axera supports that work through public repos with sample code plus multimedia pipeline examples for AXera chips, including AXERA-TECH’s ax-pipeline repo based on AX650N/AX8850 1.
  • Developers can start with partner hardware that is already for sale. Development kits using the AXERA AX620A list up to 3.6 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of INT8 performance, while a third-party write-up describes Maix-III system power as around 5W (5V@1A) 2.
