Tencent unveils Hunyuan3D-PolyGen for faster, better 3D content

Tencent has launched Hunyuan3D-PolyGen, a generative model aimed at enhancing the efficiency and quality of 3D asset creation.

The model features a technology called Blocked and Patchified Tokenization (BPT) along with an autoregressive mesh generation framework. The BPT technology reportedly reduces token representation by 74%, aiding in the stable generation of intricate models. Tencent claims that the tool can improve 3D modeling efficiency by over 70%.

The new system also applies reinforcement learning to stabilize outputs and enhance quality. Tencent reports that the model improves mesh topology regularity by 35% and reduces detail loss by 60% compared to industry standards. Additionally, it provides flexibility in using either triangular or quadrilateral faces to meet various professional needs.

The technology has been implemented in several Tencent games, improving processes in user-generated content platforms and open-world game development.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The evolution from manual 3D modeling to AI generation represents a 40-year technological journey

Tencent’s Hunyuan3D-PolyGen represents the culmination of a four-decade evolution in 3D modeling technology.

The field began with Charles Hull’s invention of stereolithography in 1983 and the first commercial 3D printer in 19881, establishing the foundations for digital 3D representation.

Throughout the 1980s, the CAD software industry laid crucial groundwork with companies like Autodesk launching AutoCAD in 1982, the first CAD software for PCs2, while the 1990s and 2000s saw incremental improvements in modeling techniques.

The current AI-driven revolution has accelerated dramatically, with projections showing the generative AI market growing to approximately $45 billion by 2023 and nearly doubling by 20303.

This shift from purely manual creation to AI assistance reflects a pattern seen across creative industries, where technology first augments human capabilities before eventually automating significant portions of the workflow.

2️⃣ AI-generated 3D assets are reshaping production economics in gaming

Tencent’s reported 70% improvement in modeling efficiency highlights a broader economic transformation happening across the gaming industry.

Studies indicate AI can reduce 3D modeling time by up to 40% for simple tasks3, closely matching Tencent’s claim of reducing modeling time from eight hours to 2.5 hours.

This efficiency gain addresses a critical challenge for game developers who faced over 10,000 job losses in 2023 due to economic pressures and rising development costs4.
