Tencent shares target rises after strong Q2, AI gains

Tencent’s stock price targets rose after the company beat earnings estimates for the June quarter.

The Chinese tech firm reported a 15% revenue rise to 184.5 billion yuan (US$25.7 billion), surpassing analyst projections.

Bloomberg data shows the consensus target price for Tencent shares increased by over 5% to HK$688 (US$87.9) following the results.

This marks the second-largest post-earnings target hike for Tencent in five years.

Analysts cited strong performance across most business segments, including ads, which benefited from AI-driven improvements.

Tencent’s shares traded at HK$594.50 (US$76) on August 15.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tencent’s recovery trajectory mirrors historical patterns after regulatory pressure

The analyst optimism pushing Tencent’s stock toward 2021 highs reflects a familiar recovery pattern following Chinese regulatory crackdowns.

Tencent has gained over $170 billion in market value in 2025, though it remains below its all-time peak 1. This recovery follows the company’s massive $187 billion market capitalization drop during previous regulatory pressures around gaming approvals and content restrictions 2.

The current analyst consensus suggests the market believes Tencent has successfully navigated the regulatory environment that previously constrained its growth.

Historical data shows Tencent’s resilience through regulatory cycles, with the company maintaining its dominant position in China’s gaming market despite periodic setbacks.

2️⃣ Gaming revenue concentration creates both opportunity and vulnerability

Tencent’s gaming division generated over $8 billion in the most recent quarter, representing roughly one-third of the company’s total revenue 3.

This concentration in gaming, while profitable, creates significant dependency on a sector that has faced regulatory scrutiny in China.
