Tencent revenue rises 13% as it ramps up agentic AI

Tencent reported revenue growth of 194.4 billion yuan (US$28.28 billion), up 13% as net income rose 14% while expanding its agentic AI efforts.

The results reflected gains in gaming and beat analyst estimates.

Tencent has released agentic AI services including WorkBuddy and a newly released agentic AI framework, and is developing a WeChat-native AI agent aimed at automating tasks for its roughly 1.4 billion users.

Analysts say Tencent benefits from WeChat data and integration, but its cloud and fintech segment is a weak point; its cloud arm faces competition from Alibaba Cloud and other providers.

Apple cut fees for China app developers, including WeChat mini-programs, to 12% from 15%, and analysts estimate the reduced fees will add a low-single-digit percentage to Tencent’s earnings this year.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Tencent’s AI ambitions are fueled by its social and gaming ecosystems

  • “Agentic AI” refers to Tencent’s effort to build AI agents across its ecosystem. It is putting its self-developed HunYuan foundation model (a large AI model trained on broad data) and external models such as DeepSeek (an AI model from a third party) into products like Weixin (WeChat) and its AI-native app Yuanbao 1. Tencent has said it is working toward agents that help users finish complex tasks inside Weixin, using Mini Programs (lightweight apps inside WeChat), payments and commerce, content, plus social features 1.
  • Advertising still drives near-term growth. Tencent reported marketing services revenue growth of 17% year-on-year in Q4 2024. It tied that result to higher engagement and AI upgrades to its advertising platform, including gains in Video Accounts advertising and Weixin Search advertising 1.
  • Gaming also helps fund AI work. Tencent said international games revenue rose 15% year-on-year in Q4 2024, or 16% in constant-currency terms. It credited strong results from titles including Brawl Stars and PUBG Mobile 1.

Tencent’s AI agent playbook could redefine the super-app model globally

  • Tencent is adding AI features to Weixin and laying out a long-term “blue sky” plan for a Weixin AI agent 1. It has described Weixin’s mix of communications and social, content through Official Accounts and Video Accounts, Mini Programs, plus payments and commerce as an advantage for building agents that complete tasks within the app 1.
