Tencent reports 13% Q1 revenue growth, gaming drives gains

Tencent on May 14 reported a 13% year-on-year increase in revenue for the first quarter of 2025, which was primarily driven by its gaming segment.

Net profit also rose by 14% compared to the same period last year.

Despite revenue exceeding market expectations, the company’s net profit fell short of analyst estimates from LSEG.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tencent’s gaming dominance reflects strategic portfolio approach

Tencent’s accelerated growth in gaming stems from its commanding 50% market share in China’s gaming industry, supported by a diverse portfolio of studios including Timi, Riot Games, and Supercell 1.

The company’s domestic gaming revenue surged 24% year-on-year to 42.9 billion yuan, while international gaming revenue grew 23% to 16.6 billion yuan in Q1 2025, demonstrating success both at home and abroad 2.

This performance is especially notable given that gaming historically represents about 31% of Tencent’s total revenue, making it a crucial driver of the company’s overall financial health 3.

The company’s strategy of focusing on “evergreen games” that sustain long-term player engagement, like Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile, provides consistent revenue streams despite market fluctuations 3.

Tencent’s over 800 investments in gaming companies worldwide have created a robust ecosystem that helps it navigate regulatory challenges while expanding its global footprint 3.

2️⃣ AI investments reflect aggressive push beyond core gaming business

Tencent’s capital expenditure surged 91% year-on-year to 27.5 billion yuan in Q1 2025, primarily directed toward AI-related investments, signaling a strategic pivot toward technology enhancement 2.

The company is actively integrating AI capabilities across its platforms, including its WeChat ecosystem (with 1.3 billion monthly active users), to enhance user experience and operational efficiency 2.

These AI initiatives are already yielding results, particularly in performance advertising and gaming, contributing to the 20% year-on-year growth in marketing services revenue to 31.9 billion yuan 24.

Tencent’s emphasis on AI-driven innovation comes as the company faces challenges from a slowing domestic economy, positioning technology enhancement as a critical growth driver 5.
