Tencent Q2 revenue rises 15% on gaming, AI ads boost

Tencent reported a 15% year-on-year revenue rise for Q2 2025, reaching 184.5 billion yuan (US$25.7 billion) and beating analyst forecasts.

The Chinese tech giant’s gains were driven by strong gaming results, with domestic gaming revenue up 17% to 40.4 billion yuan (US$5.6 billion) and international gaming revenue up 35% to 18.8 billion yuan (US$2.6 billion).

The company’s top-performing games included Honor of Kings and Dungeon & Fighter Mobile.

Marketing services revenue rose 20% to 35.8 billion yuan (US$5 billion), aided by increased use of AI-powered ad services.

Tencent’s net profit for the quarter was 55.6 billion yuan (US$7.7 billion), also above analyst expectations.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Gaming expansion reflects global market leadership position

Tencent’s 35% international gaming growth gains more significance when viewed against its global market dominance.

The company ranks as the second-largest gaming company worldwide by revenue, with projected 2025 earnings of $25.5 billion 1. This scale means that even strong percentage growth represents massive absolute revenue increases.

Tencent’s flagship title Honor of Kings alone has generated $13.94 billion in lifetime revenue, while PUBG Mobile has earned $9.52 billion 2. These individual games outperform entire companies in the gaming sector.

The international growth is particularly noteworthy because Tencent already controls significant global market share through its ownership stakes in major studios like Riot Games and Epic Games 1.

2️⃣ Marketing services surge reflects massive AI investment commitment

The 20% growth in marketing services revenue, driven by AI-powered ad solutions, stems from substantial underlying investment increases.

Tencent’s capital expenditures for AI initiatives surged 91% year-on-year, demonstrating the company’s aggressive push into AI technology 3.

This significant spending increase explains how Tencent achieved enhanced targeting and optimization capabilities that drove the strong marketing services performance mentioned in the earnings.
