Tencent is increasing its efforts to grow its international cloud computing business as demand rises for Chinese AI models overseas, according to a senior executive.

Dowson Tong, who leads Tencent’s cloud and smart industries group, said the company’s overseas cloud unit has posted the fastest growth among its divisions, with high double-digit increases in recent years.

AI is driving much of this expansion, as Tencent looks to offer Chinese open-source AI models to clients outside China.

Tong said some markets prefer to host large language models locally, and Tencent provides tools to support these needs.
