Tencent expands overseas data centers as AI demand surges
Tencent is expanding overseas data center investment to support its cloud clients in more than 150 countries and regions.
The company is using Southeast Asia as a base to sell its AI products in international markets, targeting existing users of its cloud computing and big data services, especially in Indonesia.
Dowson Tong, chief executive of Tencent’s Cloud and Smart Industries Group, said at the company’s Global Digital Ecosystem Summit in Shenzhen that overseas demand for Tencent’s AI services grew by triple digits over the past year.
He said global businesses showed “very high interest and demand” for Chinese AI offerings.
Among the products Tencent is taking overseas is WorkBuddy, which Tencent describes as an AI agent for everyday office work and markets as an AI package for workplace productivity.
In Indonesia, local rules govern data storage and cross-border transfers, while the country’s cloud sector is growing.
