Tencent has released Hunyuan MT, a new series of open-source AI translation models, and claims it outperforms Google Translate and other major systems in benchmark tests.

The Chinese tech firm said the Hunyuan MT lineup includes two main models – MT-7B and MT-Chimera-7B – both with 7 billion parameters, as well as two smaller, compressed versions, all the models were trained on a mix of multilingual and paired translation datasets and tested on the MMLU-Pro and WMT25 benchmarks.

According to Tencent, Hunyuan MT surpassed Google Translate in 30 out of 31 language pairs on WMT25, and also outperformed models like GPT-4.1 and Claude 4 Sonnet in most comparisons.

The company said it used reinforcement learning and ensemble techniques to boost translation quality.
