Tencent debuts AI tools to accelerate digital philanthropy
Tencent has rolled out a new suite of AI-driven tools to help non-profit organizations digitize their operations and improve transparency.
The company introduced 15 digital tools aimed at streamlining project execution, donation management, and service delivery. One of the highlights is a payment system that leverages WeChat Pay to transfer donations directly to recipients’ accounts. The system also supports bank card and social security card transfers, reducing the risks associated with manual cash handling.
The China Children and Teenagers’ Fund, a non-profit focused on supporting underprivileged youth, has adopted Tencent’s payment tools for one of its program, which distributes scholarships in rural areas. The organization previously relied on cash handouts, raising security concerns.
In addition to financial tools, Tencent unveiled AI products to improve information accessibility. These include “AI Ask Project,” which uses Tencent’s Hunyuan large language model to provide structured answers about charity projects, and “ima”, a platform that allows non-profits to build custom AI-powered knowledge bases from internal documents and online sources.
Tencent also announced a 135 million yuan (US$18.6 million) industry funding program for 2025 to support small and mid-sized organizations, including those engaged in non-public fundraising.
So far, over 800 charity projects have adopted Tencent’s digital tools, facilitating the distribution of more than 50 million yuan (US$6.9 million) in donations.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Tencent’s decade-long philanthropy strategy shows deliberate progression
The new AI tools represent the culmination of Tencent’s methodical evolution in digital philanthropy, which began well before today’s AI boom.
As early as 2007, Tencent pioneered the concept of “Public Welfare 2.0” to promote greater public involvement in charity through technology, moving away from traditional government-led initiatives 1.
This foundation-building paid off with the 2015 launch of “99 Giving Day,” which by 2018 had mobilized over 28 million individual donations totaling 1.414 billion yuan ($206 million) in just three days 2.
Tencent’s approach has consistently emphasized transparency and accountability, with Tencent co-founder Chen Yidan highlighting that “rationality” would be key for building trust in charitable donations 2.
The company’s long-term commitment is further evidenced by Pony Ma’s pledge of 100 million shares (valued at over $2 billion) in 2016 for medical, educational, and environmental causes in China 3.
This progression shows how Tencent’s current AI initiative isn’t merely following technological trends but represents the next step in a carefully developed, long-term philanthropy strategy.
