Tencent-backed Uzbek ecommerce unicorn Uzum plans pre-IPO round

Uzum, Uzbekistan’s first tech unicorn, plans to raise a pre-IPO funding round in Hong Kong in 2026 after securing US$70 million from Tencent in August, which brought its valuation to US$1.5 billion.

Founded in 2022 and registered in Abu Dhabi, Uzum operates ecommerce, fintech, and banking services for individuals and small businesses in Uzbekistan.

Co-founder Nikolay Seleznev said the company is considering a public listing in 2027, with possible venues including Hong Kong, London, Abu Dhabi, or Nasdaq.

Uzum reached unicorn status in 2024 after raising US$114 million through series A equity and debt.

The company runs Uzum Market, the largest digital marketplace in Uzbekistan, along with express delivery and digital banking services.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Uzum disclosures before pre-IPO

  • Uzum reported unaudited US$150 million net income in 2024 1 but has not shared customer acquisition cost or lifetime value or cohort retention (average cost to acquire a user, profit per user over time, and share of users who keep buying).
  • Monthly users jumped from 10.6 million to nearly 16 million in about six months 23, which raises unit economics questions since marketing spend behind the surge is undisclosed.
  • E-commerce Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) hit US$345 million 3 across more than 11,000 sellers by October 2024 4, which implies about US$31,000 per seller and a marketplace that skews to smaller merchants over big brands.
  • Filings omit fintech loan quality 53 with no Non-Performing Loan (NPL) rates or delinquency trends or credit loss provisions for a book that has disbursed US$421 million in unsecured lending (loans without collateral) 3.

Vendor openings at Uzum logistics

  • A 100,000 sqm warehouse handles up to US$4.5 million in daily GMV 5, which drives need for warehouse management systems and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors.
  • Plans target 20–30% of deliveries via seller fulfillment (merchants packing and shipping from their own facilities) 6, so integration APIs and tracking systems matter for 16,000 merchants 6 on FBS (Fulfillment by Seller) or DBS (Delivery by Seller) 74.
  • Over 2 million Visa debit cards are live 8 plus 5 million planned 3, giving payment gateways and fraud tools a path into processing as QR code payments expand 6.
  • Uzum plans to onboard merchants from China and Turkey 6, so cross-border payment rails must move money across borders and handle conversion plus compliance.
