🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Soul profits come from virtual goods
- Soul earns mainly from paid extras like virtual items and memberships, ads add a smaller slice, which can lift margins and helped it post profit in 2023 after a 1.324 billion yuan loss in 2021 1.
- In 2021, 1.655 million paying users came from 31.6 million MAUs, a 5% pay rate 2. The task is to grow payers while keeping avatar-first, appearance-neutral design that draws Gen Z, who make up 74.9% of users 1.
- Tencent has a 49.9% economic stake, founder Zhang Lu votes Tencent’s shares through a proxy 2. Filings leave related-party risks unclear, which blurs how much growth comes from demand versus support from Tencent.
AI push abroad needs localization and safety
- It entered South Korea plus North America in 2020, then had 3,500 US users by 2021 3. IPO funds target expansion abroad. The company will need localization (language plus cultural adaptation), content moderation systems (tools, teams to enforce community standards), and payment rails outside China with support for local cards or digital wallets.
- Job posts for overseas product operations, social media plus community operations, and AI roles signal active expansion 4. Vendors with expertise in Southeast Asia or Latin America should watch moves beyond Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, and Changsha 5.
- Facial expression capture and AI recommendations need a strong Content Delivery Network (CDN) 3. Performance tuning will matter as usage spreads. Metaverse features must adapt to uneven networks (avatar-centric 3D social experiences).
