SanegeneBio, a biotechnology company with operations in Boston, Shanghai, and Suzhou, has closed its series B funding round, raising over US$110 million.

Tencent-backed company develops RNAi-based therapeutics and plans to use the new capital to progress its clinical-stage drug candidates and expand research across multiple disease areas.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

SanegeneBio raises over US$110 million with pharma and state investors

  • Funding follows a 2023 Innovent collaboration 1 and a 2025 Eli Lilly deal up to $1.2 billion linked to LEAD tissue-selective delivery technology (SanegeneBio’s delivery platform for guiding RNA interference therapies to specific tissues) 2. Lilly also took equity, signaling commitment beyond a license. Backers include Sino Biopharm, an unnamed industrial group, and a state-owned fund that tends to invest for diversification.
  • SGB-3908 for hypertension dosed its first patient in 2024 1. AHA 2025 Phase 1 data reported sustained angiotensinogen reduction with favorable safety 3. The pipeline has four clinical candidates 2. No Phase 2 timelines or a lead indication creates near-term uncertainty versus Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals with defined Phase 3 programs 45.

RNAi vendors can target China-based trial support as SanegeneBio and Innovent expand cardiometabolic work

  • China work stems from the Innovent tie-up 3. Innovent is China-based with 15 early-stage molecules, and its IBI3016 enrolled 40 Chinese subjects 3. Hypertension studies use multi-cohort dose escalation with AGT tracking and 6-month pharmacodynamic checks, with Angiotensin II in preclinical work 13. Connected home blood pressure devices, remote consent, or real-world data links can cut dropouts in long RNAi trials 34. The obesity push targets INHBE and ACVR1C (activin receptor type 1C, also known as ALK7) 6 while Wave Life Sciences’ WVE-007 cut visceral fat by 9.4% at 3 months 7. That supports demand for imaging core labs offering DEXA, MRI fat reads, or lean mass analysis 7.
