Temu suspended in Vietnam due to registration failure: report
Chinese ecommerce platform Temu has been ordered to stop operations in Vietnam following its failure to meet the Vietnamese government’s deadline for business registration, as reported by state media on Thursday.
The platform launched in Vietnam in October, which was given until the end of November to register with authorities to avoid restrictions on internet access.
The Vietnam News Agency, citing the Ministry of Industry and Trade, confirmed Temu’s failure to complete the registration resulted in a temporary suspension.
Details about the suspension’s duration and reinstatement conditions remain undisclosed.
As of Thursday, the Vietnamese language option was absent on Temu’s website when accessed within Vietnam. A notification indicates that Temu is working with local authorities on registration.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has raised concerns over the impact of Chinese ecommerce platforms on local markets. Issues include aggressive discount strategies and the sale of counterfeit goods.
Recent legislative changes in Vietnam pose additional challenges for foreign ecommerce companies. These include mandatory VAT payments for local representatives and the removal of exemptions on low-priced imports.
Temu and its parent company, PDD Holdings, have not commented on the situation.
