Temu cuts Google, Meta ads as US tariffs strain operations
Temu, an ecommerce platform under PDD Holdings, has reduced its advertising on Google and Meta after new US tariffs disrupted its operations.
This decision follows a significant drop in the number of ads placed on Google.
Since April 12, 2025, the daily ads from Temu’s primary entity, WhaleCo, fell to 14, according to the Google Ads Transparency Centre.
This is a sharp decline from the 30,000 to 60,000 ads recorded between April 6, 2025 and April 9, 2025.
On Meta’s platforms, which encompass Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, Temu’s ads dropped to four as of April 16, 2025, according to data shared by the company.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Tariffs create ripple effects throughout digital advertising ecosystems
Temu’s ad suspension is part of a broader trend, with research showing tariffs significantly impact advertising budgets across the industry.
A recent study found 94% of advertisers express concerns about the impact of tariffs on their spending, with over 20% expecting budget cuts of 11% to 20% and another 60% anticipating cuts of 6% to 10% 1.
Economic forecasts predict that tariffs could reduce social media ad spending by up to $10 billion in 2025 alone, potentially lowering year-over-year growth in this channel to just 1.5% 2.
The timing of these tariffs is challenging as they coincide with critical ad buying periods, creating uncertainty in spending commitments across platforms 1.
Businesses are responding by shifting focus from growth to efficiency in their advertising strategy, prioritizing maintaining visibility rather than more expensive brand-building campaigns 1.
2️⃣ Cross-border e-commerce faces distinct challenges from tariff structures
Temu’s business model is particularly vulnerable to recent tariff changes that specifically target Chinese imports and low-value shipments.
The elimination of the de minimis exemption for low-value packages from China directly impacts platforms like Temu that rely on shipping individual low-cost items directly to US consumers 3.
