Temasek’s deeptech arm leads $13.5m seed round for AI startup

Gridcare, a startup addressing grid capacity challenges for data centers, has announced a US$13.5 million seed funding round after emerging from stealth mode.

The funding round was led by Xora, the deep science investment arm of Temasek, with participation from Acclimate Ventures, Aina Climate AI Ventures, Breakthrough Energy Discovery, and others.

The company uses advanced mapping and AI tools to identify untapped grid capacity.

Gridcare analyzes over 200,000 scenarios, considering factors such as fiber optic availability, natural gas, permitting, and community sentiment.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The scale of AI data center energy demand is creating unprecedented grid challenges

Data centers currently consume 3-4% of total U.S. power demand, but this figure is projected to surge to 11-12% by 2030, primarily driven by AI workloads and increased digitalization1.

This dramatic growth explains why utilities are struggling to keep up. The U.S. will need an additional 50-60 GW of data center capacity by 2030, requiring over $500 billion in infrastructure investments1.

Lead times for powering new data centers in high-demand areas already exceed three years, creating a significant mismatch between tech companies’ expansion timelines and the grid’s ability to accommodate them1.

Gridcare’s approach of finding untapped capacity addresses a critical bottleneck in the system, as data centers are projected to account for 30-40% of all new electricity demand in the U.S. by 20301.

The growing trend of hyperscalers building their own power plants highlights how the traditional grid expansion model is struggling to keep pace with the rapid growth of computing demands.

2️⃣ AI workloads create fundamentally different power consumption patterns

The energy intensity of AI is far greater than traditional computing. Each ChatGPT request consumes approximately 2.9 Wh, significantly higher than a standard Google search2.

Power density in data centers is expected to increase from 36 kW per server rack in 2023 to 50 kW by 2027, requiring fundamental changes in how facilities are powered and cooled3.

AI training models are particularly energy-intensive, with some requiring between 324 MWh and 1,287 MWh for each training run—equivalent to the electricity consumption of hundreds of homes for an entire month3.
