Temasek-backed UK startup CuspAI seeks $200m at $1b valuation

CuspAI, a UK startup that uses AI to discover new materials, is in talks to raise at least US$200 million in a round that could value it at more than US$1 billion.

No term sheet has been signed, and the company was valued at close to US$800 million after raising additional funds following a series A last summer led by New Enterprise Associates and Temasek.

Founded in 2024, CuspAI sells a platform for designing materials for semiconductors, batteries, sustainable energy, and carbon capture.

It added funds after securing commercial contracts worth tens of millions of dollars.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

CuspAI’s valuation rests on its team and claimed model results

  • CuspAI says its proprietary model MOFGEN reaches a 49% success rate for generating valid unique and novel materials. That tops Microsoft at 10% and Meta at 16% 1.
  • Those results have supported early commercial traction and helped explain the company’s swift rise in valuation 2.
  • The advisory board includes AI pioneers Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun 2. It also includes Lord John Browne, former CEO of BP 2. Martin van den Brink, former president and CTO of ASML, also serves on the board 2. ASML is a Dutch maker of chipmaking equipment 2.

AI materials science demands large sums and lab spending

  • CuspAI’s fundraising fits a wider contest in materials AI. Rivals are raising large early rounds to build software as well as automated robotic labs 3.
  • US-based Periodic Labs raised a US$300 million seed round to develop advanced AI models and the physical labs needed to test them 3.
  • The trend is pushing venture capital firms beyond software into “neolabs” 3. These startups combine AI software with lab infrastructure to solve scientific and industrial problems 3.
  • A single new material can take a decade and hundreds of millions of dollars to discover 1. Faster progress could reshape supply chains for products such as electric vehicle batteries and semiconductors 1.
