Temasek joins $820m round for fintech firm iCapital

iCapital, a fintech firm specializing in investment solutions, has raised over US$820 million in its latest funding round.

This increase brings its valuation to over US$7.5 billion.

The financing was co-led by T. Rowe Price and SurgoCap Partners, with participation from State Street and other existing investors, including Temasek, UBS, and BNY.

The capital raised will support iCapital’s global expansion, strategic acquisitions, and further development of its technology platform.

Since its founding in 2013, iCapital has completed 23 acquisitions, including Mirador, AltExchange, and Parallel Markets.

Goldman Sachs acted as the financial advisor for the funding round, while Ropes & Gray provided legal counsel.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Alternative investment platforms gaining unprecedented valuations amid retail investor expansion

iCapital’s $7.5 billion valuation arrives at a pivotal moment in the alternatives landscape, as BlackRock’s outlook projects the wealth channel will allocate approximately $20 trillion to private markets by 2030.

This valuation is particularly noteworthy considering the broader context: private equity has underperformed public markets for three consecutive years, with 2024 PE returns at just 7.3% compared to public equity returns of 25% 1.

Despite these performance challenges, iCapital’s platform now services $945 billion in assets globally, demonstrating how technological infrastructure is becoming increasingly critical to democratizing access to alternative investments.

The valuation reflects growing institutional confidence in platforms that can reduce the operational friction that has historically limited wealth management’s participation in alternatives, even as total alternative assets under management have surpassed $33 trillion globally 2.

This significant capital injection positions iCapital to further consolidate its market position through strategic acquisitions, having already completed 23 such transactions including recent ones with Mirador, AltExchange, and Parallel Markets.

2️⃣ Private credit emerges as strategic growth vector amid banking retreat

iCapital’s expansion comes as the private credit market is experiencing substantial growth, projected to reach $2.6 trillion by 2029 according to J.P. Morgan, driven largely by traditional banks retreating from riskier lending segments 1.
