Temasek backs SG-based AI firm Whale’s $60m funding

Singapore-based enterprise AI firm Whale has raised over US$60 million in its series C1 and C2 funding rounds.

Investors include Temasek Holdings, Linear Capital, BOSCH Ventures, Singtel Innov8, MDI Ventures, MTR Lab, and Gentree Fund.

The funding will support Whale’s product development, global expansion, and talent acquisition.

Founded in 2017, Whale offers AI-powered tools for automating business operations, improving decision-making, and providing customer insights. Its product suite includes spatial analytics, voice intelligence, generative content, and AI agents.

Whale serves over 600 enterprise customers across 20 countries in sectors like retail, healthcare, and automotive.

The company plans to expand in Southeast Asia, North America, and globally, while exploring collaborations with its investors.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Whale’s funding coincides with an unprecedented AI investment surge

Whale’s $60 million funding arrives during what analysts describe as a “Great Reawakening” for AI investments, with investors allocating $27.1 billion to AI startups in Q2 2024 alone, nearly half of all US startup funding1.

This represents a 57% increase compared to the same quarter last year, showing how Whale is securing capital during a period of exceptional investor confidence in AI technologies1.

The timing is significant as 2024 marks the first time more mega-deals are going to AI companies than non-AI companies, indicating a shift in venture capital priorities2.

Whale’s ability to close consecutive funding rounds (Series C1 and C2) reflects this broader momentum, where despite a general tech downturn, AI-focused companies continue to attract substantial investment.

This suggests investors are focusing on companies with applied AI capabilities rather than just theoretical innovations, with Whale’s extensive customer base (600+ enterprises) likely validating its business model.

2️⃣ Enterprise AI platforms face growing competition for talent and computing resources

Whale’s heavy R&D focus, with nearly 70% of its team dedicated to technical development, aligns with industry-wide trends showing AI startups facing significantly higher operational costs than traditional software companies.
