Temasek backs $163.5m in Sweden clean energy tech firm Aira
Aira, a clean energy technology company based in Sweden, has raised €150 million (US$163.5 million) in equity from existing investors including Altor, Kallskär, Kinnevik, Lingotto, and Temasek.
The funding will be used to expand Aira’s operations and develop its residential heating solutions across Europe.
The company has entered Germany, Italy, and the UK since its launch in June 2023, and now employs 1,200 people.
Aira plans to invest in its Swedish R&D center and increase production at its factory in Wroclaw, Poland.
The company will use the new capital to deepen its presence in current markets and strengthen partnerships with home and energy sector firms.
Aira focuses on air source heat pumps as an alternative to gas boilers, targeting a European market where 130 million boilers remain in use.
The company claims that switching to its solution can reduce household heating costs and CO2 emissions.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Geopolitical tensions accelerate heat pump market adoption beyond climate drivers
Aira’s rapid scaling from launch in June 2023 to a €200M annual run-rate demonstrates how energy security concerns have driven demand beyond traditional climate motivations.
European heat pump sales doubled in early 2022 as industries and consumers sought alternatives to volatile gas prices, with companies like Wienerberger’s brickworks saving €425,000 annually after switching from gas boilers to heat pumps 1.
The EU’s REPowerEU plan targets installing 10 million new heat pumps within five years to reduce dependence on Russian gas, turning what was initially a climate initiative into an energy security priority 2.
This dual motivation explains why Aira could attract €150M from existing investors despite being barely 18 months old—the company is benefiting from a convergence of environmental and economic factors driving adoption.
2️⃣ European heating transition represents massive infrastructure replacement opportunity
The €150B market projection for European heat pumps by 2030 reflects the scale of replacing fossil fuel infrastructure that currently dominates residential heating.
