Telegram, WeChat apply for licenses under Malaysia’s new rules
Telegram and Tencent’s WeChat have started the process of obtaining operating licenses under new Malaysian regulations, according to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)’s statement on Thursday.
The licensing framework, effective January 1, 2025, aims to improve user protection, online safety, and regulatory oversight for internet messaging and social media providers.
Companies that meet the licensing conditions must submit their applications by December 31, 2024, or risk facing regulatory consequences.
MCMC said both Telegram and WeChat are anticipated to meet the required standards promptly.
The commission also encouraged all eligible service providers to adhere to the licensing deadline and offered assistance for a smooth application process.
