Tech giants boost AI spend as cloud, ads drive growth

Major US tech firms are ramping up AI investments as demand for AI services fuels growth in cloud computing and digital advertising.

Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon all reported strong revenue for the April–June 2025 quarter, highlighting AI as a major growth driver.

Microsoft will spend a record US$30 billion this quarter, following strong Azure cloud sales and a positive forecast.

Alphabet raised its annual capital expenditure forecast by US$10 billion to US$85 billion.

Amazon expects full-year capital expenditures to hit US$118 billion, above analyst estimates.

Meta increased its spending forecast to US$66 billion to US$72 billion, citing AI development costs.

Azure generated over US$75 billion in sales last year. Microsoft’s Copilot tools reached more than 100 million users. Alphabet’s Gemini AI assistant has over 450 million monthly users.

Microsoft and Meta shares rose after the updates, while Amazon’s dipped due to weaker cloud results.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Current AI spending surge continues decade-long capital expenditure escalation

Big Tech’s record AI investments represent an acceleration of a spending trend that began nearly a decade ago.

The collective capital expenditures of Amazon, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft rose dramatically from $23 billion in 2015 to a projected $68 billion by 20191. During this period, their capex increased from 5.5% of sales in 2012 to 12% in 2018, marking a fundamental shift from “asset-light” to more capital-intensive business models2.

Today’s announced spending, with Microsoft potentially reaching $100+ billion annually and Alphabet at $85 billion, represents a continuation of this pattern but at an unprecedented scale.

The current investment levels haven’t been seen since the late 1990s, with AI-related capital expenditures expected to exceed those of the telecom boom from that era3. This suggests we’re witnessing not just routine infrastructure expansion, but a generational shift in how technology companies allocate resources.

2️⃣ Tech infrastructure spending now drives significant portion of economic growth
