Tech founders urge Sequoia to act on partner’s Islamophobic remarks
Over 520 startup founders and tech executives have signed an open letter urging Sequoia Capital to act against partner Shaun Maguire for a post deemed Islamophobic.
Maguire referred to New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani as an “Islamist” and accused him of lying, later apologizing in a 30-minute video on X.
The letter demands that Sequoia Capital issue a public apology, investigate Maguire’s conduct, implement a zero-tolerance policy on hate speech, and establish a reporting hotline for discrimination.
A formal response from the venture capital firm is requested by July 14, 2025.
Notable signatories include Hosam Arab of Tabby, Hisham Al-Falih of Lean Technologies, and Ahmed Sabbah of Telda, who criticized the remarks as harmful and urged accountability.
Maguire and Sequoia have not commented beyond the video, while other tech leaders stressed that such behavior threatens diversity in the industry.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Tech’s accountability movement extends to venture capital leadership
The Maguire controversy highlights a significant shift in how the tech community expects venture capital firms to uphold standards of accountability and inclusivity.
This incident follows a broader pattern where tech companies faced scrutiny for amplifying extremist content after the January 2021 Capitol attack, though investors largely avoided similar accountability for their roles 1.
Amnesty International has previously found that most influential VC firms operate with minimal consideration for human rights impacts, suggesting a systemic governance gap in how investment decisions are evaluated 2.
The open letter’s specific demands, including a hotline for reporting discrimination and an investigation, reflect growing expectations that VCs should be held to the same standards of conduct as the companies they fund, rather than operating with special immunity.
This represents a notable evolution in the tech ecosystem, where historically VC partners’ personal views and behaviors were rarely challenged by founders who depended on their capital.
2️⃣ Diversity considerations increasingly impact investment relationships
The backlash against Maguire reveals how diversity and inclusion issues are becoming central to business relationships in venture capital, not just peripheral concerns.
