TDK to buy Malaysia battery maker Linergy for $241m

TDK said on May 19 that its Singapore battery unit Amperex Technology Singapore will buy all of Linergy Power‘s shares for about US$241.1 million.

The deal will make the Kuala Lumpur lithium-ion battery maker a wholly owned subsidiary.

The price includes US$240 million for the shares and about US$1.1 million in advisory fees, and the transfer is set for June 15.

TDK said the deal will help it build a more flexible supply network for its energy solutions business.

Linergy was founded in December 2024, and TDK said it indirectly owned 25.5% of the company before the deal and that Linergy posted US$380 million in assets and a US$22.7 million net loss for the year ended March 2026.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The deal centers on energy storage production capabilities

  • Linergy describes itself as a company focused on liquid-cooling lithium battery technology for green energy storage solutions 1.
  • Its materials also lay out a contract manufacturing model that runs from supplier selection, contracting, sample production, mass production, to delivery 1.
  • That fits TDK’s goal of building a more flexible supply network for its energy solutions business by bringing production plus process work in-house through an acquisition 1.

The acquisition adds Southeast Asian capacity plus technical know-how

  • TDK’s purchase of a Malaysia-based manufacturer expands its footprint in Southeast Asia. The available sources do not confirm that this move is part of a “China+1” strategy, a supply-chain approach in which companies add manufacturing outside China to lower concentration risk 1.
  • The move also fits a wider industry pattern in which companies buy specialized skills plus manufacturing depth.
  • By acquiring a company that lists liquid-cooling battery technology plus end-to-end contract manufacturing services, TDK adds technical know-how along with production capacity 1.
