TCV leads $160m round for insurance startup Corgi

Corgi joined Y Combinator’s Spring 2024 batch, and has now raised US$268 million, making it one of YC’s newest unicorns.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Corgi sells and runs its own insurance policies

  • Corgi is a licensed insurance carrier. It creates, underwrites, and manages its own policies and claims from start to finish 1.
  • That setup lets the company produce quotes in under 10 minutes and bind policies the same day. Traditional insurance providers often take two to four weeks 1.
  • The firm offers AI liability coverage for risks tied to AI products, including model hallucinations and algorithmic bias 1.
  • Corgi first focused on startups. It is now moving into other sectors, beginning with trucking 1.

Coverage built for AI companies may ease startup slowdowns

  • Startups often need specialized coverage such as Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance, which protects company leaders from certain legal claims, to close funding rounds. Corgi aims to serve that need 2.
  • Fast policies shaped for newer risks, including AI hallucinations, may cut delays in enterprise sales and fundraising 1.
  • This could add pressure on traditional insurers and brokers. Their slower offerings may fit poorly with fast-changing AI risks 1.
