TCL eyes $200m from India TV unit stake sale
TCL Electronics, a Chinese consumer electronics maker, is weighing a sale of a stake in its Indian TV manufacturing unit to local buyers as it looks to expand the business.
The company is working with an advisor and wants to raise at least US$200 million, though talks are preliminary and may not lead to a deal.
The move would mirror Haier Smart Home’s sale of a 49% stake in its India unit to Bharti Enterprises and Warburg Pincus last year.
It also follows TCL’s plan to set up a TV joint venture with Sony Group Corp.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
TCL growth plans rely on big factories and steady demand
- TCL expects its share of India’s premium TV market to rise to about 10% in 2025, nearly twice its current level, said TCL India head Philip Xia 1.
- To support that push, TCL put money into a Tirupati plant in Andhra Pradesh with capacity for 8 million TV panels each year, said TCL India general manager Mike Chen 2.
- Chen estimated India’s total TV market at roughly 10 million units in 2022, so the Tirupati line sits close to nationwide volume and leaves room for growth plus exports 2.
Chinese hardware firms in India lean more on local partners
- TCL’s possible stake sale tracks a similar move by Haier, which agreed to sell 49% of its India unit to Bharti Enterprises, an Indian conglomerate, and Warburg Pincus, a private equity firm 3.
- That setup pairs funding with access to local business ties, helping a “Made in India, Made for India” plan that raises local sourcing and expands distribution 3.
- Joint ventures and local partners also help Chinese consumer electronics brands work through India’s rules for Chinese investment 4.
- TCL’s steps signal that risk-sharing partnerships are gaining ground for Chinese hardware companies operating in India.
