Tata-owned BigBasket launches 10-minute food delivery

Tata-owned grocery delivery platform BigBasket has launched a 10-minute food delivery service in select areas of Bengaluru.

The service includes offerings from Starbucks, a Tata and Starbucks Corporation collaboration, and Qmin, a food platform by Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL).

Customers can order beverages, snacks, meal bowls, and desserts.

This move follows CEO Hari Menon’s earlier announcement to enter the food delivery sector by 2025.

BigBasket’s entry adds pressure to the quick commerce space, which includes Swiggy, Blinkit, and Zepto.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Grocery platforms face supply chain hurdles in rapid food delivery expansion

The challenges in BigBasket’s entry into 10-minute food delivery mirror widespread operational difficulties in the quick-service food segment, as evidenced by Zepto’s recent struggles.

Zepto temporarily shuttered 44 cafes across seven cities due to supply chain constraints, affecting over 400 employees despite previously spending ₹250-300 crore monthly on operations 1.

These challenges explain why BigBasket is starting with a limited menu focusing on beverages, snacks, and meal bowls, and exclusively partnering with Tata-owned brands like Starbucks and Qmin rather than broad restaurant partnerships.

Specialized infrastructure is required for food delivery that differs significantly from grocery logistics, which is why BigBasket implemented the TATA BB Matrix system to unify its order management, warehouse management, and transport management systems before this expansion 2.

BigBasket’s measured approach reflects lessons from competitors, as Zomato’s Eternal recently pivoted away from restaurant partnerships for its Bistro service, focusing instead on its in-house rapid food delivery model.

2️⃣ Tata’s vertical integration strategy challenges independent quick commerce specialists

BigBasket’s food delivery launch represents a strategic consolidation of Tata Group’s digital assets, creating synergies across its portfolio that standalone quick commerce players cannot match.

The company is specifically leveraging Tata-owned food brands, Starbucks (a Tata Consumer Products joint venture) and Qmin (owned by Tata’s Indian Hotels Company), demonstrating a vertical integration advantage unavailable to competitors like Zepto and Blinkit 3.
