Tata to use Chery platform for premium EVs, sources say

Tata Motors plans to use a vehicle platform supplied by Chinese automaker Chery for its Avinya premium electric vehicles.

The move follows delays to an earlier program based on a platform from Jaguar Land Rover, the Indian carmaker’s British luxury vehicle unit.

Tata had originally planned Avinya around JLR’s electrified modular architecture for a 2025 launch, but the timeline slipped to 2027 as JLR’s India manufacturing plans were delayed, prompting Tata to seek an alternative.

Tata said it will use the Freelander platform produced by Chery Jaguar Land Rover in China, a joint venture between Chery and JLR.

Avinya vehicles will be built at Tata’s newly opened factory in Tamil Nadu.

Chery Jaguar Land Rover said in June 2024 it would produce electric vehicles on Chery architecture under the Freelander name, a JLR-licensed brand initially for China and later export markets.
