Taobao debuts in Kazakhstan with its first Russian-language app
Taobao, the Chinese online shopping giant, has officially launched in Kazakhstan with a Russian-language version of its mobile app and a slate of localized services, stepping up its bid to win over Central Asian consumers.
This is the company’s first multilingual adaptation for a non-English-speaking market.
Shoppers in Kazakhstan can now browse and purchase items—from fashion and household goods to mother and baby care products—in Russian, with prices displayed in tenge. Though Kazakh, the country’s official language, is not yet supported, Taobao says it plans to expand language options over time.
Taobao reported that over 70% of new users in Kazakhstan placed their first order within a week of the Russian version’s launch. The company also noted a 47% increase in order conversions among new users compared to prior rates.
The platform began localization efforts in 2024 and now offers multiple payment options including Visa, MasterCard, and Alipay International. A dedicated logistics network has also been built, comprising over 200 pick-up points across the country, alongside home delivery services.
To promote cross-border shopping, Taobao offers free shipping on orders over 99 yuan (approximately US$13.60). It also provides localized return services in Kazakhstan.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Taobao’s localization strategy reverses historical Western failures in Asia
Taobao’s Russian-language rollout in Kazakhstan represents a calculated move based on well-documented eCommerce history.
When eBay entered China in 2003, it failed against Taobao despite having first-mover advantage, largely because it refused to adapt its platform to local preferences and language needs 1.
By 2006, Taobao had captured 60% of China’s market while eBay’s share fell to 30%, forcing eBay’s retreat from China in 2007, a cautionary tale Alibaba clearly internalized 1.
The 47% jump in conversion rates from the Russian-language interface demonstrates the critical importance of linguistic adaptation in cross-border commerce, particularly in markets with strong language preferences.
This move is significant as Kazakhstan is Central Asia’s eCommerce leader, with its market valued at approximately $4.2 million in 2022 and projected to reach $5 billion in 2023 2.
2️⃣ Central Asia emerges as a pivotal eCommerce battleground
Kazakhstan’s strategic position makes it an ideal gateway for China’s digital expansion into Central Asia’s rapidly growing eCommerce sector.
