Taiwan, US defense tech firm partner on military drone program
Taiwan has signed a multi-year agreement with US defense tech firm Auterion to integrate its autonomous vehicle software into military drones.
The partnership, involving Taiwan’s National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, aims to boost Taiwan’s defense capabilities amid growing tensions with China.
Auterion’s operating system and swarming technology will be added to drones, though the agreement’s duration and financial terms remain undisclosed.
Taiwan plans to produce 180,000 drones annually by 2028.
The move responds to increasing restrictions on Chinese tech in the US and Europe.
Auterion will help Taiwan adopt its software, co-develop new technologies, and work with local manufacturers.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Taiwan’s drone initiative addresses critical supply chain vulnerabilities
Taiwan’s push to become a drone manufacturing hub is a strategic response to a significant security vulnerability in the global drone market.
China currently controls approximately 90% of the global commercial drone market and produces many essential components needed for drone manufacturing 1.
This dominance creates substantial supply chain risks for Western nations, as even US drone companies are heavily dependent on Chinese parts, raising national security concerns among military officials 1.
Taiwan’s $1.35 billion investment (2024-2028) in developing its drone sector specifically aims to create systems without Chinese components, leveraging its semiconductor expertise to fill critical supply chain gaps 2.
The initiative comes amid growing tensions and Beijing’s 2024 restrictions on drone parts sales to the US and Europe, which highlighted the fragility of global drone supply chains.
Taiwan’s goal of producing 15,000 unmanned aerial systems monthly by 2028 represents a concerted effort to establish itself as an alternative manufacturing hub for trusted drone technology 2.
2️⃣ Auterion deal reflects Taiwan’s asymmetric defense strategy
