Researchers at Taiwan’s National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) unveiled the world’s smallest quantum computer, which harnesses a single photon to execute quantum algorithms.

At a press conference in Hsinchu, near the capital Taipei, Professor Chuu Chih-sung explained how the quantum computer’s compact design encodes information across 32 time-bins in a single high-dimensional photon.

It makes a crucial element for electromagnetic interactions.

These particles can sustain stable quantum states at room temperature, reducing energy costs compared to conventional quantum computing systems, which often necessitate extensive cooling.

NTHU President Kao Wei-yuan emphasized the importance of this development, noting its distinct approach compared to leading quantum labs in the United States. These labs typically rely on large cooling systems.
