Taiwan tops $4t market cap on AI boom, overtakes UK
Taiwan overtook the UK by stock market value, with listed companies on the island worth US$4.14 trillion compared with the UK’s US$4.09 trillion.
The shift came as tech stocks rose on AI demand and hopes of de-escalation in the Iran conflict.
The Taiex has climbed 16% this month and recovered losses tied to the conflict, while chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) hit another record high, buoyed by strong revenue growth.
Taiwan’s economy remains much smaller than the UK’s, at US$977 billion versus US$4.3 trillion under IMF 2026 estimates, but exports of AI-related products have helped lift its market.
Foreign investors bought a net US$8.9 billion of Taiwanese shares in April after a record US$28.7 billion outflow in March, while the FTSE 100 rose less than 4% this month amid inflation and interest rate concerns.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Taiwan’s stock market rise is built on a narrow, high-value export boom
- Taiwan’s market jump comes from pricier AI hardware exports. Export volumes for many products fell in 2025 1.
- Three product lines drove most of the export gain in 2025. Data processing machines, integrated circuits, and related parts made up 95% of the increase 1.
- This tight focus tracks with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the island’s biggest chipmaker. TSMC lifts the Taiex stock index and makes more than 90% of the world’s most advanced chips used in AI 2.
The island’s AI boom creates a fragile global chokepoint
- Taiwan depends on imported fuel. The island imported 95% of its energy in 2025, so AI chip output faces risk if geopolitics disrupt shipping lanes 1.
- TSMC’s advanced packaging capacity is booked through 2025. Advanced packaging is the step that readies chips for servers or other gear. Deliveries of graphics processing units (GPUs) are slipping. GPUs are chips used to train and run AI systems for AI infrastructure worldwide 3.
- The rush is pushing outbound investment to a record. TSMC raised its planned spending in the US state of Arizona by US$100 billion. Economists warn of a “Dutch disease” outcome where one booming sector weakens the rest, which could drain talent and capital from other industries in Taiwan 1.
