Taiwan to launch TSMC-inspired robotics startup by 2026

Taiwan plans to establish a contract robotics startup by 2026. This initiative is inspired by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), according to Wu Cheng-wen, head of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC).

The government will provide partial funding, with private investors contributing the rest.

The National Development Fund is expected to invest up to NT$10 billion (US$330.8 million) but will hold no more than a 30% stake to avoid interfering with operations.

The startup will focus on contract manufacturing to ease client concerns about competition.

While Taiwan’s private sector has advanced in robotics, efforts have mainly focused on components like robotic arms.

The new venture aims to develop multifunctional, AI-powered robotics for various industrial uses.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Taiwan’s mixed track record with government-backed tech initiatives

Taiwan’s TSMC model represents a rare success story of government-initiated tech ventures, where initial public investment of US$70 million in 1987 led to the world’s largest chipmaker, now with paid-in capital of NT$259.33 billion according to the original article.

However, not all government tech initiatives have achieved similar success. The “Asia Silicon Valley” project launched with approximately $350 million faced significant implementation challenges, with reports indicating only two out of a targeted 2,200 visas for foreign entrepreneurs were issued 1.

Many Taiwanese entrepreneurs have expressed skepticism about government initiatives, noting they often focus more on attracting foreign startups rather than supporting local innovation ecosystems 1.

Taiwan continues to struggle with tech talent retention, with an estimated 20,000-30,000 professionals leaving annually for better opportunities abroad despite government efforts to stem this outflow 1.

The new robotics initiative’s success may depend on whether it can avoid the regulatory hurdles and implementation delays that hampered previous programs while maintaining the hands-off operational approach that helped TSMC thrive.

2️⃣ Global robotics represents massive growth opportunity beyond traditional manufacturing

The global industrial robotics market is projected to grow from $55.1 billion in 2025 to $291.1 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate of 18.1% 2.
