The Taiwanese government is preparing for emergency discussions after US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on imported semiconductors, Premier Cho Jung-tai said on Jan. 29.

Cho said the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and related agencies are monitoring the situation and will meet soon to develop support strategies for Taiwan’s semiconductor industry if the tariffs are enacted.

Trump’s proposal, announced during a Republican conference in Miami on Jan. 27, targets various imports, including semiconductors, steel, aluminum, copper, and pharmaceuticals.

Taiwan’s semiconductor industry is vital to its economy, accounting for a large portion of the country’s exports.

Cho emphasized the need for international collaboration to maintain Taiwan’s technological edge.

Industry leaders are advised to await further actions from the US before deciding on their response.
