Taiwan to add five undersea cables to boost network resilience
Taiwan will build two new international and three domestic undersea communications cables to improve network resilience, according to Minister of Digital Affairs Lin Yi-jing.
The cables are expected to have reinforced protective layers to prevent damage.
Taiwan has experienced multiple incidents of suspected sabotage of its undersea cables by Chinese vessels in recent years.
In response, lawmakers passed stricter penalties for cable tampering and seizure of equipment earlier this month.
The cable expansion is part of a broader initiative to strengthen Taiwan’s communications infrastructure, including the use of Amazon’s low-earth-orbit satellites and a high-orbit satellite from US-based Astranis.
