Taiwan shares fall as tech sector drops on AI concerns

Taiwan’s stock market closed down on December 1, 2025 as electronics shares fell amid concerns over high AI valuations.

The Taiex index dropped 283.9 points, or 1%, to 27,342.5, its lowest point of the day.

Trading volume reached NT$476.5 billion (US$15.2 billion).

Shares opened slightly higher after gains on Wall Street but quickly reversed as selling intensified, especially in major tech stocks.

TSMC, the largest listed company, declined 2.1% to NT$1,410 (US$43.5), dragging the index lower.

The electronics subindex lost 1.3%.

Hon Hai Precision, known as Foxconn, fell 1.6% to NT$222 (US$6.85).

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Foreign selling hits Taiwan as tech prices stretch

  • Taiwan Stock Exchange data put net foreign selling at NT$24.4 billion, about US$780 million, in one session 1.
  • MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International) Taiwan Index, a benchmark for many institutions 2, is under fresh scrutiny over AI stock prices. The article gives no price-to-earnings (PE) ratios or earnings revision data (analyst forecast changes), which makes it hard to tell if the drop fits overvaluation or sentiment 3.
  • Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) fell 2.1% to NT$1,410. As a core holding in the iShares MSCI Taiwan exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the MSCI Taiwan Index 4, the slide suggests a sector reset not a stock issue.
  • The electronics subindex fell 1.3%. MediaTek rose 3.6% after a Morgan Stanley upgrade, hinting at selective positioning, not broad AI gloom.

Foreign flow swings open short windows for buyers

  • Net foreign selling of NT$24.4 billion can push Taiwan tech off fair value. Global fund managers and ETF providers can time entries off capitulation (forced or panic selling) or a reversal in daily foreign flow 5.
  • International brokers and digital wealth platforms can build client campaigns around Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) foreign flow markers 1. They can add Taiwan exposure when selling peaks and local liquidity absorbs extra supply.
  • Taiwan’s ETF market grew to NT$6.4 trillion by April 2025 6. Newly approved active ETFs (funds run by portfolio managers rather than tracking an index) add channels to pursue rebounds in oversold Taiwan tech through passive and active strategies.
