Taiwan probes China’s largest chip firm for illegal hiring
Taiwanese authorities are investigating Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), a major chipmaker in China, for allegedly illegally recruiting local engineers to access advanced chip technology.
The Investigation Bureau, part of Taiwan’s Ministry of Justice, announced the inquiry on Mar. 28.
According to the bureau, SMIC set up a branch in Taiwan under the name of a Samoa-based company to attract talent.
As part of the investigation, officials conducted raids at 34 locations and questioned 90 individuals earlier this month.
The probe also targets 11 Chinese technology firms, including SMIC.
SMIC has not provided comments regarding the allegations.
